Symbolism of the card

A horned, bat-winged figure crouches on a dark pedestal, an inverted pentagram above its head and a torch pointing down in one hand. Chained to the pedestal are a naked man and woman with small horns and tails. Look closely: the chains around their necks are loose enough to slip off. The card shows bondage that is partly chosen – kept in place by fear, habit or desire rather than by force.

The Devil upright

Upright, The Devil shines a light on what is holding you captive: an unhealthy habit, a toxic relationship, a dependency, money worries, or beliefs that keep you small. It does not judge desire itself; it shows what happens when something you want begins to control you. The key message is in the loose chains – you have more freedom than you think. Naming the attachment honestly is the first step. The card can also simply point to strong passion and temptation, which ask for awareness rather than guilt.

The Devil reversed

Reversed, The Devil often marks a turning point: you are noticing the chains and starting to remove them. It can describe breaking a habit, leaving a harmful situation or reclaiming your independence. In some readings it warns that you are still in denial about a pattern, so be honest with yourself. Either way, freedom is close, and support from others can help you take the last step.
