Symbolism of the card
A great wheel turns in the sky, inscribed with letters that spell TARO and ROTA and with alchemical symbols. A sphinx sits on top holding a sword, a snake descends on one side and a jackal-headed figure rises on the other. In the four corners, a man, an eagle, a lion and a bull – the fixed signs of the zodiac – read from books among the clouds. Everything is in motion: what goes up comes down, and what falls will rise.
Wheel of Fortune upright
Upright, the Wheel of Fortune announces that things are moving. A new chapter, a lucky break, a sudden change of circumstances or a turning point is at hand. It reminds you that life moves in cycles; nothing stays the same forever, good or bad. When the wheel turns in your favour, it is wise to make the most of the opportunity. The card also invites you to notice patterns – the lessons that keep coming back – and to ride change with flexibility rather than fighting it.
Wheel of Fortune reversed
Reversed, the Wheel of Fortune suggests a downturn or a period when events seem out of your control. It may also show resistance to change, or a pattern repeating because its lesson has not yet been learned. Remember that the wheel keeps turning: difficult phases pass. Focus on what you can influence – your attitude and your next choice – and let go of what you cannot.
