Symbolism of the card
A man hangs upside down by one foot from a living T-shaped tree, his other leg bent behind the knee to form a cross. His hands are folded behind his back, and his face is calm – a golden halo shines around his head. He is not being punished: he has chosen this position. By turning the world upside down, he sees what he could not see standing upright.
The Hanged Man upright
Upright, The Hanged Man asks you to pause. Pushing harder will not help right now; letting go of control will. It is a card of waiting, surrender and looking at a situation from a completely different angle. What felt like a delay may turn out to be the time you needed to understand something important. The card can also speak of a willing sacrifice – giving up something small for something more meaningful. Rest in the in-between, and allow a new perspective to arrive.
The Hanged Man reversed
Reversed, The Hanged Man suggests that the pause has gone on too long or is being resisted. You may feel stuck, stalling on a decision, or sacrificing yourself in a way that no longer serves anyone. It can also show impatience – trying to force things that need time. Ask yourself what you are holding on to and whether the waiting is wise or simply fearful. Sometimes the shift needed is a decision, not more delay.
